Hazel's Textbook Question

Chapter 2.3
Problem Solving with Rational Numbers in Fraction Form
Question #26

To find the original fraction you use the opposite operations from the question. For example, it says divide by - 1/4. Instead of dividing, you multiply.

The first step is to multiply -3 3/4 by -1/4

Turn -3 3/4 into an improper fraction.
Multiply the 2 fractions together.
You should get 15/16

Second Step: Subtract 3/4 from 15/16

Find a common denominator: 16
Subtract the fractions.
You should get 3/16

Third Step: Divide 3/16 by - 1/2
Divide the fractions.
Find the reciprocal.
Multiply.
Simplify if possible.

The original fraction was -3/8.
