Nils' Textbook Question 2.4

2.4

Question 20

Leon's rectangular living room is 8.2m by 4.5m. A square rug covers 2/5 of the area of the floor. What is the side length of the rug, to the nearest tenth of a metre?

First off we have to figure out the area of the room before we find the rug. So the formula for a rectangle is l x w.
8.2 x 4.5 = 36.9m
That is the area of the room. The rug is 2/5 the size of the room. So we multiply the area by 0.4. (Remember! 0.4 = 2/5)
36.9 x 0.4 = 14.76m
14.76 is the area of the square rug.
To find the side length of the square rug we have to square root it.
the square root of 14.76 = 3.8m
(I apologize for not having a symbol for square rooting. If anyone has suggestions please comment.)
So the side length of the square rug is 3.8m.

  1. Haha I noticed I put 4.2 instead of 2.4 so I changed that.
